Men Have Grown Since the 19th Century

European men are an average of 4 inches taller than they were in 1870.

European men are an average of 4 inches taller than they were in 1870.

The news comes as a result of researchers sifting through old records from military files to population surveys and comparing the results against current norms.

Natural selection and genetics were quickly ruled out as possible causes.

According to one of the study’s authors, a “Darwinian explanation” didn’t fit, nor did any relating to the gene pool as the growth spurts would have been more isolated.

Taking into account that eventual height is largely determined in the first two years of life and the historical realities of the time, they decided the key factor was better health.
